Finding
The senior West Barsham branch inside the founders' Court-of-Wards network, 1623–1641
In John Gurney's emigration decade the senior West Barsham branch of the Gurney family stood inside the personal network of the Massachusetts Bay founding leadership: after Thomas Gurney III died in his father's lifetime (c.1621×1623), his son Edward Gournay succeeded Henry G15 in 1623 as a minor ward, and Edward's widowed mother worked — through the leading Suffolk puritan patron Brampton Gurdon — to John Winthrop and Emmanuel Downing at the Court of Wards, out of a Sedley/Lewkenor matrix rooted at Emmanuel College. This is a new English-side record class contemporaneous with the emigration; it makes a Norfolk Gurney's arrival in Winthrop's colony network-consistent, without itself supplying the arrival.
