The Tour du Rempart is the best current site anchor for the surviving defensive remains of medieval Gournay-en-Bray. It should be mapped separately from both the town record and the Collégiale Saint-Hildevert church record.
Why this place matters
The early Lords of Gournay were frontier lords. Their authority was bound to the defensive strength of Gournay-en-Bray on Normandy’s eastern march. Hugh de Gournay I is remembered as the fortifier who built or strengthened the citadel and tower tradition later called La Tour Hue.
What remains from the fortified town
Normandie Tourisme and Seine-Maritime Tourisme describe the Rue du Rempart remains as one of the few surviving traces of medieval Gournay’s defensive system. The visible remains are:
- one tower;
- the conical base of another tower;
- defensive ditches.
The sources also describe the fortifications as both a fortified place and a seigneurial residence. This is important for the Gournay story because it connects the defensive landscape to lordship, not merely town walls.
La Tour Hue caution
The G36 research companion and fact sheet discuss La Tour Hue, the tower associated by tradition with Hugh de Gournay I. The Tour du Rempart is the best mapped surviving fortification remnant, but it should not be called La Tour Hue as a matter of fact unless stronger site-specific evidence is added.
