John Gurney and the 1659 Dudley Farm rate

Hazen’s printed Billerica history gives the 10 September 1659 rate list for the half payment of the Dudley Farm purchase. John Gurney appears in the list with an assessment of 2-5-10. Hazen frames the list as fulfilling the agreement that later inhabitants should repay the original farm proprietors one-half of the farm’s cost. The Dudley Farm price was 110 pounds, so the half-payment target was 55 pounds; Hazen adds that the balance of that 55 pounds was probably assessed on later town purchasers.[1]

This is a useful expansion of John Gurney’s Massachusetts geography, but it should be handled carefully. The printed list shows participation in a purchase-rate assessment connected to Billerica; it does not, without the underlying town record and related land records, prove that John permanently resided there or held a specific parcel.
