Evidence
Newgate, master of the 1636 'John Gurney' apprentice, was of Horningsheath by Bury St Edmunds
John Newgate - the Boston feltmaker who in July 1636 brought a runaway apprentice named John Gurney before the governor - was himself of Horningsheath (Horringer), Suffolk, about three miles south-west of Bury St Edmunds, and lived at Hessett and Bury St Edmunds (then Southwark) before emigrating to Boston in 1633. An apprentice he carried was therefore most plausibly a young man from Newgate's own Suffolk neighbourhood around Bury.
Why this conclusion
- Supports Finding Banks's Bury attribution is an unproven lead that most plausibly tracked Newgate's apprentice; consistent with a Norfolk originNewgate's Horningsheath/Bury origin supplies the mechanism by which a Bury tag attaches to the apprentice, not the emigrant.
