This page expands an Evidence link in Identity — Ackworth, Yorkshire: the findings, sources, and qualifications behind the marked passage.
Analysis
Ackworth held at a residual ~3%: the only wife-name match, capped by naming and corridor mismatches
The Ackworth household is the only same-name comparator in the record sweeps whose wife is genuinely named Mary in roughly the right window, which keeps it visible rather than clearing it outright. Two structural problems weigh against it being the emigrant: the first child is John Thomas, born seven months after the marriage, not Sarah (the colonial John's first child, born about 1628); and Yorkshire sits outside the Norfolk-Suffolk-Essex-London corridor that produced the Great Migration, with no primary record bridging an Ackworth Gurnoe household to any Massachusetts arrival or to the colonial John's known associates. Weighing the other way, the colonial John's own English marriage to Mary is independently bounded to before 1628 by his daughter Mary's chronology, so the 1636 Ackworth bride can only be a hypothetical second English marriage, and the household's disappearance from the indexed Yorkshire record after 1637 has the shape of an unrecorded emigration. Older compiled Gurney genealogies giving the colonial John's wife as 'Mary Barton' or 'Mary Burton' also make this the first primary record to supply that exact name at a plausible date.
Why this conclusion
- Synthesizes Analysis The elimination scaffold: structural grounds, not a blanket same-surname suspicionAn instance of the elimination scaffold's residual (not fully eliminated) branch: a single-attestation household held at low probability rather than cleared outright.
- Depends on Evidence 1636 Ackworth marriage of John Gurnoe to Mary Burton; 1637 baptism of John Thomas GurnoeThe residual assessment has no content without the underlying marriage and baptism records.
Qualifications and conflicts
- Qualified by Open question Open: parish-register image pull, burial search, and the Mary Barton/Burton tradition-provenance testThese open items are what could move the residual estimate away from its current ~3% reading in either direction.
Related context
- Provides context for Finding Reconstructed family group: five children (Sarah, Mary, Richard, John Jr., Peter) + Isaac uncertain, all Mary'sThe colonial John's own five-child roster (Sarah b. c.1628) is what bounds his first marriage to before 1628, capping Ackworth's fit.
